The Southall plantation site in Charles City County was the homeland of the Chickahominy in the year before the English settle at Jamestown. The plantation is located near the Necotowance’s path. It was one of the many seats of the Southall family. Furneau Southall, who is the establisher of Southall plantation, sereced on the Charles City County Committee of safety. Also, Southall was on response for the local administration of the first U.S. census in 1790. The plantation existed during eighteen, nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The original portion of the Piney Grove house was constructed as a log corncrib on the Southall plantation before 1790. It survives as a rare and well-preserved example of early log architecture in Tidewater Virginia.
We just stayed at Piney Grove this past weekend to celebrate Valentine's Day and we could not have found a more special place. The plantation is like a village with several historic houses and beautiful grounds. We had a great room overlooking the gardens. We checked in a bit early so we could take part in the progressive tour they offered - If you like history, this is a great tour, and it concluded with homemade cookies and champagne. We had dinner nearby at Charles City Tavern which the innkeeper had recommended - great choice. And when we returned home there was a roaring fire and Valentine treats on our bed. In the morning a yummy breakfast awaited us and our fellow guests in the main house. If you're going to Williamsburg you've got to stay at Piney Grove.
